RUN NEARLY BEATS FC DELCO IN 2008 STATE CUPS (4/13/08) - The
Deep Run Destroyers U-15 boys’ team gave two time PA. State champion
FC Delco Roadkill all they could handle last Sunday, falling to them 1-0 on a
late second half goal. Deep Run lead by outstanding goal keeping from TJ McGrath,
and great play by the back frustrated the Roadkill for over 60 minutes before
a battle in front of the net lead to a chip in goal. John Matz, Aaron Rapsinski,
Jake Stear and sweeper Zach Savage helped McGrath throughout the game by hounding
the physical and speedy attack of FC Delco the entire match. Mid- Fielders Alex
Stear, Jack Duffy, Daniel Hoy and Josh McManus battled all day consistently disrupting
Delco's attack and providing some great balls to Deep Runs speedy strikers. The
strikers Tyler Henry, Cody Zickler and Chuck Sturgis provided some great attacks
on goal only to be denied by outstanding defense and goal keeping throughout the
game. Deep Run played FC Delco straight up, no tricks or defensively packing the
box. "Our boys wanted to test themselves against this team" said head
coach Brian McGrath “As a coaching staff Mark Zickler, Bill Duffy and I discussed
a number of options, but in the end decided to take it to them with what we knew
best". FC Delco was repeatedly turned away throughout the first half as a
speedy Deep Run team attacked as often as possible putting them under pressure.
Delco was forced time and time again to take some shots that seemed out of frustration
and than disbelieve as the half closed out 0-0. In the second half after an impressive
build up and push that nearly lead to a goal by Deep Run. FC Delco; with the wind
at their backs; changed their attack to an even more impressive possession and
passing game that pressured the Deep Run mid-field and backs for much of the second
half. After losing mid-fielders Alex Stear and Josh McManus to injuries on collisions,
Deep Run battled back time and time again in the closing minutes of the game with
some nice opportunities. Will Brunner and Dave Spadaro come off the bench playing
their hearts out with the rest of their teammates to the whistle blew. "We
knew the boys would step up as they have always done" said assistant coach
Zickler. "This group has lots of heart and we all look forward to what they
will become as young men both on the field and in life. They demonstrated a tremendous
amount of character today and the soccer community will take notice of this effort".
Well done Deep Run U-15 boys and good luck to a fine group of boys from the FC
Delco Roadkill as they strive for yet another Pa. State soccer title.
Deep
Run Charge U-13 girls won their 2nd consecutive Indoor State Championship- The team, coached by Mike Koch, defeated FC Delco 2-0 in the final on goals
by Fallon Koch and Brianne McGrath. Ashley Schoellkopf pitched a shut out in goal.
Deep Run defeated Wyoming Valley 3-0 and Tri-Boro 2-0 in the semi's and quarter's.
Ramsey McMenamen and Steph Robinson led the tem defensively. Team members are:
