12U Travel team wins 2008 Oley Valley Tourny - After rain washed out their entire Saturday, the Lady Lightning turned in a perfect 5-0 record on a long Sunday as they repeated as Oley Valley Tournament Champions on the weekend of May 31. Deep Run came out strong on Sunday morning, winning both pool games. Paige Decew threw a one-hitter in the first game, and Emily Mayhew only allowed one hit in the next game. Brooke Labs delivered the big blow in the second game, a bases loaded triple, her second hit in the same inning. Meanwhile Mayhew helped her cause with 2 hits. The Lady Lightning defense was airtight once again. A pitching duel developed in the semi finals. Deep Run fell behind 2-1 in the top of the fourth, then tied it at two on an RBI single by Faith Knight. Decew came on in relief in the fifth inning, and retired the next 8 batters, striking out 6. With 2 outs in the home fifth, Labs homered and Decew drove in a run with a single. Shanks delivered an RBI single in the sixth to go up 5-2 and then threw out a runner from right field in the seventh to end the game. McCreary led the defense with 4 assists and 2 putouts from shortstop. In the finals against Brandywine, the Lady Lightning offense remained in high gear. Taylor led off the bottom of the first with a single. Labs followed with a triple, and came home on McCreary’s single. McCreary stole second, took third on a passed ball and executed a textbook delayed steal of home. McCreary had 3 hits and 3 runs, with a pair of hits each from Taylor and Labs. Another error-free defensive effort supported pitcher Decew, whose exceptional control held Brandywine to one hit enroute to a 5-2 complete game victory and the championship trophy.
