Ken
Beer and Sons captured the U10 Girls Intramural Softball Championship at Deep
Run in a hard fought game this past Saturday as they beat Rita's Water
Ice 7 - 5. It was a see saw battle as Ken Beer showed their championship character
to twice overcome being behind in score during the game. Ken Beer struck first
as Rhiannon Comito hit a ground out to score Olivia Campbell who had previously
hit a single and had moved around the bases. Rita's struck back in the top of
the third with an RBI single by Alyssa Hughes and a two run RBI single by Liz
Kessler. The bottom of the third saw the Ken Beer team hit 5 singles in a row
to take back the lead 4-3. After a scoreless 4th, Rita's scored twice to take
a 5-4 lead. Again, Ken Beer showed their heart to

respond with two runs in the bottom of the 5th. It all started with Sarah Murgia
leading off with a single and stealing second when Rita's made an errant pick
off throw to first. Briana Gery then hit a sharp single to plate Sarah who made
a perfect slide and was safe at a close play at home. That seemed to further energize
Ken Beer as they got consecutive singles by Lauren Weidler and Olivia Campbell
to take a 7-5 lead. They would never relinquish the lead as Lauren Weidler came
in and struck out the first two and fielded the last out with a clean play to
first.
The win
went to Briana Gery who pitched steller throughout the game and season. Olivia
also pitched very well in relief going an inning and a third without giving up
a run. "I'll tell you what" said Charlie Murgia, coach of the Ken Beer
team, "that was some of the finest softball you'll see at any level of play.
To come back like that twice in a game shows how much character these young girls
have. You know that was a darn good team they beat. Amazing!".
